Last Sunday, I took my son Alexander, 9, to hear a performance of the Hebrew Choir Festival, which “aims to promote Hebrew as the common global Jewish language.” He didn’t want to go — it was a gorgeous afternoon — but I increasingly prioritize stuff like this.

This is a great article about an important subject. When I was growing yo 30-40 years ago, race wasn't NEARLY as much of an issue as it is now. It was in the 60s and before, and has become increasingly important since the 90s. But we're regressing. We never considered ourselves to be "white" (a completely meaningless term anyway). "White" people were the WASPS and other Christians. How could we be "white" when we were never really a part of "white" society (we have different holidays, different names, and yes - a different language, even if we didn't speak it), and they were putting us in ovens just a few decades before? None of the Holocaust survivors I knew thought of us as anything but Jewish. The idea that we are "white," isn't one of acceptance. It's an attempt to erase our identities because we are, literally, living proof that racism can't be boiled down to skin color alone.

And never would I have dreamed that there would be a day in America where Jews are routinely called "white supremacists." It is the one of the most vile things you can say about a Jewish person. And where are the "white Muslims" and "white Arabs"? The fact that you don't hear those terms demonstrates what this is really about: de-legitimizing the Jewish claim to Israel, our ancestral homeland, where we are the indigenous people. "Sorry," but none of us are Europeans. We know that intuitively, but the Europeans made that fact more than clear to use for millennia, and they continue to today.

Yes, yes and yes again. This is the best opinion piece I have read in years concerning the quickly growing mutual exclusivity of being a proud Jew and a progressive liberal in the current American form of liberalism (which is not what many people refer to as classical liberalism). As the author of the article states "Since when did a politics that celebrates choice — and choices — devolve into a requirement of being forced to choose?" It is very sad that American Jews are being forced to choose, like their ancestors in Europe, between their identities and "fitting in." For me the choice is very simple: fitting in will ALWAYS lose.
