I lived in S. Diego for 13 years. It’s an antisemitic cesspool. I’ve had about 5 antisemitic incidents happen to me personally in Los Angeles where I grew up. The number was at least three times that in my time there. And is anyone surprised that this person is a progressive? Most of the incidents I experienced involved progressives. Which was surprising because I expected, given its reputation going up, that it would have come from the far right. We still get it from both sides, living there demonstrated to me how much times have changed.

This also mirrored my experiences:

Brown later expressed her shock that only one of the assembled commissioners — Kate Clark, who works for Jewish Family Services — took Raufi to task for his remarks. “It was so unbelievably shocking in the moment — and even more shocking was the silence of every single commissioner and county staff,” she told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Almost all of the antisemitism I experienced there happened in public. While I can, and did, handle those incidents myself, the most shocking part was, and this is true in L.A. too, every non-Jew, EVERY SINGLE time, say there in silence. These are mostly the same people who would have gone berserk if a black pardon had been called the “n-word.” It really reminds us that, as Jews, we can only rely on ourselves.

This is very similar to my situation with USC. If you are Jewish, and/or if you are a sane, thinking, principled person, you cannot support either school. You can't compartmentalize and just tell yourself that "it's just football," or "it's just a few people." These institutions support this kind of behavior. So if thoughtful people who care about these schools do not stand up, who will? If you wear a UCLA shirt, go to an SC game, attend alumni events etc., you are facilitating bigotry. It's as simple as that. Trust me, as a once proud USC alumnus, I understand how hard it is to give up that part of your life. There are higher principles than sports, rivalries and fun. This is reality, not the fantasy of escapism that schools dole out as a drug to induce permanent loyalty.

They don't know why this is? I like that the author posits "rising inequality" as a cause. As someone in this age group, I think that's ridiculous. There is less opportunity (or at least it feels that way to many of us) but no one ever expected "equality," if that means that we all achieve exactly the same thing. In fact, that is a ridiculous idea. "Equality" can exist at the level of poverty. I think that if people in that age range really are unhappier, it's because we are the first generation in decades not to be more successful than our parents. That said, it is still true that there is still more opportunity here than in almost any other time in human history.
