Disclosure: This piece is from a Socialist magazine, so most will find this far from a balanced viewpoint, and the tone drifts into a zone of American self-hate that I find personally uncomfortable (in particular the grossly generalised dispersions cast upon the "Greatest Generation", the virtually all of whom, I'm sure, would have much rather been at home with their families). Nevertheless, the premises that a) the killing of 100,000 Japanese civilians and suffering of hundreds of thousands more (not to mention the extreme suffering experienced by hundreds of thousands of Japanese-American citizens at the hands of their own government - many of whom had family serving on active duty in the US armed forces at the time) should be remembered, and b) The context and prevailing narrative needs to be analysed in a balanced, reasonable way remain powerful and relevant. As someone who has spent the greater portion of my adult life living in both Japan and America and having experienced the best of both nations, I think this topic bears further thought and reasoned debate.
