Studio City's Sportsmen's Lodge hotel could be demolished and replaced with 520 apartment units.

They tore the restaurant down to build a mall, they always planned to tear the hotel down too. This is what developers do. They target historic sites, claim to care about some form of preservation, get what they want and then tear down everything else connected to the site. This is a historic and beautiful hotel that is one of the few things left that makes Studio City unique. But they want to destroy everything unique. L.A. will become a huge landscape of generic, plain, soulless boxes. The problem is that far too many people have the idiotic idea that all change is good. It’s the same moronic idea that drives the politics, in general, of California.

Only in LA can a site be deemed to be historic but still legally have everything but its facade gutted. I am happy that they are restoring the outside, but essentially the actual building is gone. This happens over and over again here. The problem with that is that once you gut the inside of a historic building, it's no longer truly historic and its value as is severely diminished.

In a defeat for preservationists, a three-judge appellate court panel cleared the way for the demolition of a 1960 bank building in Hollywood. At the same time, the court sent the redevelopment project back to the city for more work.

Yet another piece of LA's history will soon be a victim of the LA City Council's greed, and the myopia of residents who don't understand our history. We need an organization that is effective to replace the pathetic LA Conservancy while there are still buildings left to save.

Hundreds of historic buildings throughout this county are threatened by causes ranging from abandonment to mansionization. These 12 are the ones keeping me up at night. Some are amazing marvels hidden behind board-up, some are tiny treasures versus development pressures, and some are just coolness owned by people who don’t care about coolness. They all add to our city’s history.

Every one of these deserves to be saved, but knowing present day L.A. and its total lack of awareness of its own history, they will all be torn down soon.
